Overview

Exam settings help you balance test security, user experience, and technical requirements. Use the considerations below to determine which options best fit your testing environment.

In this article, you will learn:

  • What recording options are available

  • What lockdown options are available

  • What verification options are available

Important: The considerations listed below are only examples to help guide setup decisions. Each institution should use its own academic policies and security standards to determine the appropriate configuration for their testing environment.

Recording Options

  • Record Camera

    • A primary camera (webcam) will be required, and will be recorded throughout the session

    • This setting is required for the Virtual Testing Center

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - for all virtual testing sessions

      • Off - Appropriate for in-person testing with active, in-room proctoring

  • Record Audio

    • A microphone will be required, and audio will be recorded throughout the session

    • This setting is required for the Virtual Testing Center

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - for all virtual testing sessions

      • Off - Appropriate for in-person testing with active, in-room proctoring

  • Record Second Camera

    • A second camera (smartphone or wifi enabled tablet) is required, and will be recorded throughout the session.

    • This setting must be turned on at the account level in order to be available as a setting option.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Recommended for high-stakes remote exams where additional visibility is needed to monitor for unauthorized materials, devices, or off-screen activity

      • Off – Appropriate for lower-stakes assessments, in-person testing, or when reducing technical complexity and setup time is a priority

Screen Recording is a default setting that cannot be turned off on any computer based exams. You will not see it listed under exam settings, but remember it will be included in all sessions.

Lockdown Options

  • Force Full Screen

    • Full-screen mode will be enforced by the browser, and any attempts to leave full-screen mode will be flagged during the session

    • Possible Considerations

      • On – Best for high-stakes exams where focus and restricted navigation are critical

      • Off – Useful for low-stakes assessments or when students may need to reference external materials

  • Only One Screen

    • A single display will be enforced, additional connected screens will be flagged and prevent the tester from moving forward with the session

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Recommended for remote, high-security exams to prevent use of secondary screens

      • Off – Acceptable in controlled environments (e.g., testing centers) or when multiple monitors are required for accessibility

  • Disable New Tabs

    • Attempts to open new browser tabs during the session will be blocked and flagged.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Ideal for closed-book or secure exams

      • Off – Use when test-takers need to access external resources (e.g., open-book exams)

  • Disable Printing

    • The ability to print during the session will be blocked

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Recommended to protect exam content and prevent distribution

      • Off – Only necessary if printing is part of the test experience

  • Disable Clipboard

    • Attempts to access the clipboard (copy and paste) during the session will be blocked.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Best for preventing content sharing or searching answers externally

      • Off – Use when written responses require copying/pasting (e.g., coding exams, written drafts)

  • Disable Right Click

    • The ability to right-click during the session will be blocked.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Adds an extra layer of restriction for secure testing environments

      • Off – Acceptable for lower-stakes exams or when usability is a priority

  • SecureSession App

    • Blocks unauthorized apps and system features from running.

    • NOTE - This feature is not compatible with Chromebooks.

    • This setting must be turned on at the account level in order to be available as a setting option.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Recommended for high-stakes exams requiring maximum security (e.g., preventing use of external apps)

      • Off – When device compatibility is a concern or for less restrictive testing scenarios

Verification Options

  • Verify ID

    • The test-taker will be asked to present a photo ID during the onboarding process.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Recommended for identity verification in high-stakes or credentialed exams

      • Off – Suitable for low-stakes assessments or environments where identity is already confirmed

  • Room Scan

    • The test-taker will be asked to do a pan of their testing environment during the onboarding process.

    • Possible Considerations:

      • On - Helps ensure no unauthorized materials or individuals are present; recommended for remote testing

      • Off – Acceptable for in-person testing or low-risk assessments
