Canvas Quiz Sync Information

SmarterProctoring syncs exam changes from Canvas automatically.

Written by Jason Fill

When you create or edit a quiz in Canvas, SmarterProctoring automatically picks up those changes so your proctoring settings stay in step with the exam. The sync process works the same way for both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, so you do not need to know which quiz engine your exam uses.

How quickly a change appears depends on what you changed.

Changes that sync immediately

Canvas notifies SmarterProctoring right away when you save a change to either of the following:

  • The quiz title

  • Who the quiz is assigned to (for example, adding or removing students or sections in the Assign Access area)

These changes are reflected in SmarterProctoring within a few seconds and rarely take more than a minute.

If you change one of these along with other settings in the same save, everything syncs immediately. For example, changing the title and the time limit together brings both over right away, because the title change triggers the sync.

Changes that sync within about 10 minutes

Any other change, such as the access code, time limit, points, due date, availability dates, or quiz questions, does not trigger an immediate notification from Canvas. Instead, SmarterProctoring checks Canvas for changes every 10 minutes and pulls in anything new.

If you do not want to wait, you can open the exam in SmarterProctoring and sync it manually.

Tip: If you already have the exam open in SmarterProctoring, reload the page to see the updated information.

If a change has not appeared

If a change has not appeared in SmarterProctoring after about 10 minutes, try syncing the exam manually from within SmarterProctoring. If it still does not update, something is not working as expected. Please contact SmarterProctoring Support so we can look into it.
